Northern Mountains

Laying in a long sprawl across the northern part of the Wild Steppe, the Northern mountains or Darrafell as the Jotuns name it marks the main border between the dominion of the Jotuns and the rest of the peoples of Jotunland. Tall, stark, and un-endearing many who seek the jotuns tend to chew off far more than they can handle as sudden blizzards, avalanches, and hungry beasts claim them. The only thing that the mountains deal out in any large amount is death, as jotun raiding parties flow downwards burning and looting before retreating with their ill gotten gains and slaves.

Travel in the Northern mountains is a difficult task. While getting there through the Wild Steppe is a relatively easy task, it is when one arrives at the foot of the mountains that the real difficulties come. Steep and stony the mountains are a nightmare to make your way through cross country. The two roads that lead into jotun lands are the “Orrostabraut” or literally “battle road” in the west which Norveg watches over, and the “Skerrabraut” or literally “slaughter road” in the east, closer to Black Iron and its environs. These two roads represent the easiest but also can be the most dangerous entrances into jotun lands. Traffic is frequent, and in most cases it is easier to confront jotuns away from their homelands than it is to confront them in the mountains.

In terms of flora and fauna, due to the extreme conditions, hardiness, speed and power are necessary to survive in this icy waste. Those without the necessary qualities die extremely quickly. Unlike the Expanse the diversity is considerably lower here, but it is completely made up for in sheer size and raw ferocity. Here in the mountains, direwolves, mammoths, and even wyrms or bigger can be found. Truly the mountains are a land that has shaped its denizens to be hard and proud.
