The Verdant Expanse

Covering the entire southern half of the reliably charted regions of Jotunland, the Verdant Expanse, or more colloquially the Expanse stands as the greatest frontier in Jotunland. Within is fetid borders the Expanse consumes all who enter unprepared, many simply swallowed up by the deadly plants and animals. In this land, empire building is a monumental task. With the Expanse being both so bounteous and so impassable, outside of clear cutting as those of Hesperides do, anyone would be hard pressed to fully lay claim to these nigh untamable lands. On top of that with the indigenous saurians maintaining very few permanent or even semi permanent settlements, and with the majority of the interior regions being completely uncharted most of the land is simply labeled as “the Expanse”.

Naturally this also means getting around in the Expanse is extraordinarily difficult. Roads are next to non-existent going into the Expanse. The quickest method of travel is to work your way with the river systems that are attached to the sluggish and ironically named Emerald river. Despite it being the quickest though, it is also the most dangerous. The Emerald River’s slow, and sluggish pace makes any travelling along it easy and obvious prey for any of the creatures lucking in its murky depths. Access to the northern and southern reaches of the Expanse can be done by heading to the North and South Verdant Rivers, which branch off of the Emerald River. Unfortunately though not all parts of the Expanse can be reached through the river systems and as such foot travel is still an unfortunate necessity. The one and only major road that connects Hesperides to the greater part of Jotunland is the great Iron Road, named so for the main resources being traded along these routes. Unfortunately due to trade policy and torrential rain, traffic has almost completely dried up along this route.

In terms of flora and fauna, nowhere else in the known world can compete with the diversity that is present in the expanse. Speed, stealth, and strength are key for all that inhabit the jungle. If you cannot perform in one any of those attributes, then the species tends to be quickly eradicated. As such the most fascinating megafauna can be found, from giant armoured insects, to quiet stealthy jungle cats, to prehistoric horrors long since extinct in other parts of the world. Even the plants have developed to quickly trap, kill and consume any that wander into its clutches. If there is a single phrase for the expanse, it would be: survival of the fittest.
